Module 10: Beginning Painting Portraits/Figures in Oil


Learn techniques from impasto to smooth application of paint. Prerequisite: Modules 1 and 2. Even if you have painted before, you will be working in black and white only for the first time you take the module. Materials: Turpenoid, Medium (1 part turpenoid, one part Damar varnish, one part refined linseed oil); a variety of brushes for oil; basic paint colors: Titanium White, Mars Black. Pre-stretched canvases 11 x 14 or larger, rags, paper towels, apron.


Oil colors to purchase if you continue taking this module: Cadmium Yellow light, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow, Old Holland Yellow Deep (optional), Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Deep, Alizarin Crimson, Schevening’s Purple Brown (optional), Old Holland Green Light, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Radiant Blue (Optional), Cobalt Violet.
